Side Effects of Lactulose (OTC)

Even though lactulose is virtually safe and effectual when used as prescribed, various side effects can result from using it in the treatment of cats or dogs. Increased flatulence, stomach cramps, and a distended stomach are among the most commonly observed adverse effects. These symptoms will usually pass with time. An excessive amount of lactulose can lead to diarrhea and possible dehydration. Diarrhea can generally be controlled by giving less of the drug.

Due to the high sugar content of lactulose, it is necessary to use with caution in diabetic animals as insulin dosage may need to be altered.

You may find it difficult to administer lactulose to a cat. It is distasteful and can cause excessive drooling. Lactulose is sweet syrup, thus it can easily cause stickiness on an animal’s facial fur.

Caution must also be used when giving lactulose to an animal that is on an antibiotic or another laxative. Lactulose is capable of interacting with other medications. Your veterinarian should be made aware of any other medications your pet is currently taking.

It is highly recommended not to use lactulose on an animal with hypersensitivity to the active ingredient.

Lactulose should always be kept away from light and stored at room temperature.
