Rimadyl General Information
As part of the normal aging process, dogs often develop arthritis, a degenerative joint disease. Other times it is the result of an accident or injury. Arthritis is one of the most common causes of pain and discomfort experienced by dogs. As the level of intensity in pain increases, it often causes a dog to begin limping, tire easily, show reluctance in climbing stairs, and have a decreased amount of mobility.
Although, arthritis is a debilitating disease, which can occur at any time, there is medicinal help for this disease. A non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medication known as Rimadyl (carprofen) is available for treatment of arthritis and the restrictive limitations it places upon a dog. Rimadyl is frequently used in veterinary facilities as a means of reducing pain after surgical procedures. Rimadyl not only provides pain relief, but is very palatable, making it easy to administer. It is available in a non-chewable capsule or as a chewable tablet.
A prescription from your veterinarian will be required before Rimadyl can be dispensed. Rimadyl should not be given to dogs used for breeding, lactating, or pregnant dogs. Side effects, although limited do occur with repeated use of Rimadyl, but can be monitored through regularly scheduled laboratory blood testing.
