Lactulose (OTC)

Lactulose is a drug most commonly used in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, but also used as a laxative in cats and dogs. It is a synthetic sugar made up of galatose and fructose. Lactulose is not absorbed into the blood, but passes without change into the large intestine. Bacteria in the large intestine break it down while producing acids. The resulting acids draw water into the colon, thus softening the stool and producing a laxative effect.

Lactulose is often used to treat cats with megacolon and may need to be given throughout the life of the cat. Feline megacolon is a bowel disorder caused when the nerves of the bowel are impaired. It is chronic and leads to progressive constipation.

Hepatic encephalopathy is a liver disorder that causes toxic materials, such as ammonia to accumulate in the blood. This disease can develop in male and female animals of any age or breed.

Lactulose is very effective in treating cases of canine or feline constipation. It is not approved for use in animals by the Food and Drug Administration, but is often prescribed by veterinarians. There is no medicinal equivalent to lactulose available for animals. Lactulose is available as syrup and comes in various size bottles.
