Congestive heart failure is one of the more common heart diseases diagnosed in small breed dogs and geriatric dogs. As the heart fails to function normally, the body retains water and salt. This causes fluid to build-up in the lungs. Dogs with this disease suffer from coughing, shortness of breath, respiratory rate increases, and irregular or rapid heart beats. The abdomen can become distended as a result of fluid buildup.

Veterinarians classify congestive heart failure according to the clinical signs exhibited by a dog. It is broken down into classes; Class II (mild), Class III (moderate), and Class IV (severe). Clinical signs exhibited by dogs with Class II include coughing, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Dogs with Class III are comfortable as long as they are at rest, but have very little capability of exercise. Dogs that have reached Class IV are unable to exercise and the presence of clinical signs is apparent even when they are resting.

Severity of the disease varies from one dog to another and has an affect on how well a dog will respond to medicinal therapy. Some dogs show improvement within a week of starting the treatment. Further improvements may be seen over the next several weeks.
